Douglas Bick Printmaker

An open-ended book is a story with no true beginning or ending. I strive to accomplish this concept by allowing the viewers of my work to embark on a visual adventure. I assemble expressive vignettes within an image in a format that allows people to invent their own surreal tales based on their experiences with the forms.
For me the art of storytelling is an ongoing process. The initial drafting stage allows me to structure the composition of the imagery. Printmaking allows me to elaborate on my conceptual ideas, by intertwining my illustrative storylines with technical procedures. To me these reactive processes are art, which I will continue to experiment with. The objective is to find fresh ways of animating my prints, by designing methods that stimulate the application of the surface, ink, and printed material that build on traditional methodologies.
The thematic composition of my work dictates the arrangement and usage of mixed media and added layers. While the primary focus of my work is to look for ways to express my ideas through process, I still direct the decision of media application based upon which printmaking mediums best address the
concept at hand.
The concepts within my imagery have always been formed by my personality and life experiences. My next series of work will be based upon the manipulation of old US stamps. The concepts will bridge US philatelic history with contemporary social issues. The direction of the aesthetic will be based on which mediums I believe will address the topic at hand most appropriately.
